Noted for being destroyed in The Baylor Massacre. It happened on the night of 27–28 September 1778, near Old Tappan, New Jersey. Lt. Col. George Baylor’s 3rd Continental Light Dragoons were quartered in farmhouses and barns. They were dangerously close to British lines and were caught asleep by a large British force commanded by Maj. Gen. Charles Grey. According to one history of the regiment, the dragoons received their new uniforms on September 27—the very day before the attack: white coats with medium-blue facings, blue waistcoats, white breeches and black boots. That night the regiment was smashed. in 1967, human remains of six of Baylor’s men were discovered in abandoned tanning vats at the site. Uniform remnants and buttons helped establish who they were. They were subsequently reinterred when the site was preserved.
